Module Summary: Understanding the U.S. Standards Development Process

This module provides an in-depth overview of the U.S. standards ecosystem, focusing on the role of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs), and the processes that drive consensus-based standards. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how ANSI coordinates U.S. voluntary standardization activities and represents U.S. interests in global standards forums.

The module also covers the structure and functions of SDOs, outlining how these organizations facilitate the development and maintenance of industry-specific standards. A detailed review of the standards development process—from proposal to publication—equips participants with the knowledge to engage effectively and influence outcomes. Additionally, the course outlines the formal and practical requirements for participating in international standards development, offering guidance on how individuals and organizations can gain and maintain a seat at the table.
