Module Summary: International Standards Development

This module examines the international standards development landscape, with a focus on key organizations, methodologies, and the mechanisms through which the United States contributes to global standardization. Participants will explore major international standards bodies—such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)—and the roles they play in creating harmonized technical documents that support global trade, innovation, and regulatory compliance.

The module addresses the differing philosophies and approaches that countries and regions bring to standards writing, including variations in consensus-building, technical rigor, and stakeholder representation. Special focus is given to the ISO standards development process, highlighting its structured procedures, stages of development, and opportunities for stakeholder input. Additionally, the course outlines how the U.S. participates in international standards work, often through ANSI-accredited Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs), and discusses how organizations can effectively contribute to this process to influence outcomes at the global level.

Learning Objectives:

In this module, students will learn how to:

  • Identify the major international standards development organizations and their areas of influence.

  • Compare different global philosophies and methodologies for developing standards.

  • Describe the ISO standards development process, including its key stages and decision-making structure.

  • Explain the role of the United States and ANSI in shaping international standards through formal and informal mechanisms.

  • Develop strategies for effective organizational involvement in global standards-setting to support technical leadership and market alignment.

Module Summary: Understanding the U.S. Standards Development Process

This module provides an in-depth overview of the U.S. standards ecosystem, focusing on the role of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs), and the processes that drive consensus-based standards. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how ANSI coordinates U.S. voluntary standardization activities and represents U.S. interests in global standards forums.

The module also covers the structure and functions of SDOs, outlining how these organizations facilitate the development and maintenance of industry-specific standards. A detailed review of the standards development process—from proposal to publication—equips participants with the knowledge to engage effectively and influence outcomes. Additionally, the course outlines the formal and practical requirements for participating in international standards development, offering guidance on how individuals and organizations can gain and maintain a seat at the table.

Learning Objectives:

In this module, students will be able to:

  • Describe the mission and functions of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the U.S. and global standards ecosystem.

  • Differentiate between various Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) and their areas of focus.

  • Explain the stages of the standards development process, including initiation, drafting, public review, and final approval.

Module Summary: Importance of Manufacturing Standards

This module highlights the strategic significance of manufacturing standards and their far-reaching impact on business operations, product development, and global market access. Participants will analyze how standards function as both technical frameworks and competitive tools, influencing everything from supply chain interoperability to regulatory compliance.

Special emphasis is placed on the necessity of active participation in standards development processes. By contributing to standardization efforts, organizations not only stay ahead of industry changes but also help shape the technical and commercial landscape in which they operate. The module drives home a key insight: lacking representation in standards-setting bodies limits an organization's ability to influence outcomes—ultimately ceding market control to competitors.

Learning Objectives:

In this module, students will learn how to:

  • Explain how manufacturing standards influence business operations and product lifecycle decisions.

  • Identify the risks of non-involvement in standards-setting activities.

  • Describe how standards enable access to new and existing markets through harmonization and interoperability.
